THORPE KNOCKS DOWN BUZZER BEATER TO GIVE RAMS 66-63 WIN OVER DAVIDSON

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 66, Davidson 63
  • Records: VCU (16-12, 7-8), Davidson (5-23, 1-14)
  • Location: John M. Belk Arena – Davidson, N.C.
  • Short Story: Sophomore Isis Thorpe knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give VCU a 66-63 victory in nail-biter fashion on Wednesday night.

How It Happened

  • Davidson's Hannah Early got things started quickly by connecting on a 3-pointer. The Wildcats went on to maintain a small lead until a steal from Thorpe allowed Ashley Pegram to give the Rams their first lead of the game, 13-12.
  • Both teams went on to exchange baskets, but the Rams took a 27-23 lead before Early hit a shot from behind the arc, cutting VCU's lead to one, 27-26, heading to the break.
  • Following a 40-all tie, Davidson took a small lead, however it was short lived after Keira Robinson sparked an 8-0 run to give the Rams a 51-44 lead.
  • Davidson continued to claw its way back into the game. Mackenzie Latt hit a shot from behind the arc to bring the Wildcats within three. Alex Long followed that with a 3-pointer, tying the game at 63-all with 49.4 seconds remaining.
  • Thorpe knocked down a buzzer beating 3-pointer to give the Rams a 66-63 victory.

Quotable

  • "I know we've got to check our heart beats right now, but I'm really proud of our team right now for the way they grinded out. When you come on the road in the A10, it doesn't matter, we knew it was going to be a battle. What a great shot by Isis to seal the deal for us." -- Head Coach Beth O'Boyle
  • "We've been doing a lot of situations in practice, but when you're coming down to the last minutes of the game, it's really about trusting your players. One of the things we try to preach is, that it's never the first shot, it's the second. As much as it was a great shot by Isis, it was a fantastic screen by Camille and that really got her open and a great look." -- Head Coach Beth O'Boyle
  • On second chance points: "Camille is having a great second half of the season, and she's always been getting the ball off the rim. Mel got us some there at the beginning and AP [Ashley Pegram] came flying in, and I don't even think she came down when she put some of those back in. It was a great team effort. I thought Ke [Keira Robinson] played very well defensively and it was great to see her play so well." -- Head Coach Beth O'Boyle

  • The sophomore class accounts for 1,389 of VCU's 1,760 points this season.
