  • Records: VCU (4-2), Old Dominion (3-3)
  • Location: Stuart C. Siegel Center – Richmond, Va.
  • The Short Story: Behind double-digit performances from Jordan Burgess, JeQuan Lewis and Melvin Johnson, the VCU Men's Basketball team defeated in-state rival Old Dominion, 76-67, in front of the 70th consecutive sellout at the Siegel Center on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • Johnson drained a 3-pointer to open the game and ODU responded with one of their own, which sparked a 9-0 run for the Monarchs as they took a 9-3 lead.
  • Doug Brooks knocked down a 3-pointer to cap a 10-0 VCU run to grab the lead back for the Rams with just over nine minutes left in the half.
  • It was a back and forth contest as time winded down before the break. The Monarchs connected on a pair from the charity stripe to tie the game at 35 at the half.
  • Behind back-to-back 3-pointers from Johnson, the Rams took a nine point lead, 49-40, with just over 10 minutes left in the contest.
  • The Rams continued to extend their lead, but ODU wouldn't go quietly as they kept the game close, chipping away at their deficit. ODU's Zoran Talley knocked down a 3-pointer to cutting VCU's lead to three, 58-55 but the Rams responded with a shot from long range from Korey Billbury.
  • Lewis connected a shot from behind the arc with a little less than four minutes remaining, sparking a 7-0 run for the Rams, extending their lead to 68-56.
  • Johnson made a pair at the line to secure the Rams' 76-67 victory.

Noteworthy

  • VCU has won 27 of the last 28 games in which Johnson has hit three or more 3-pointers. (The only loss this season was against Duke). The Rams are 29-3 all-time when Johnson reaches that mark.
  • After tonight, Johnson has taken sole possession of sixth place on VCU's all-time three-point list.
