Rams Break Camels' Back With 57-34 Win

The Short Story: Senior Adaeze Alaeze led the Rams with 12 points and VCU's tenacious defense continued to stifle opponents as the Black & Gold defeated Campbell 57-34 on Tuesday night.

OPENING TIP

  • Four Rams ended the night in double figure for VCU. Juniors Camille Calhoun (11) and Isis Thorpe (10 points) also had big nights for the Rams. Calhoun grabbed seven boards to lead VCU.
  • Chadarryl Clay (10 points) had six rebounds and a team-high five assists in an all-around effort coming off of the bench. Clay also led the team with 26 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • VCU's defense continued to challenge opponents, limiting the Camels to just three points in the first quarter and 17 in the half.
  • The Rams went on a 14-0 run to build a 16-3 lead, denying Campbell of a basket for over ten minutes of play.
  • The Rams continued to pull away in the second half with a three-pointer from Thorpe giving VCU a 23-8 advantage.
  • The Rams offense picked up the pace after the break, shooting 50.0% from the field.
  • The Camels tried to cut into the deficit and made it a ten-point game late in the third, but the Rams proved too much to overcome.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Rams forced 20+ turnovers for the fourth straight game to open the season, causing 26 Campbell mistakes.
  • VCU took advantage of Camel errors, outscoring their opponent 28-2 off of turnovers.
  • VCU outscored Campbell in the paint 32-12 and 22-3 on second chance opportunities.
