Colonials Defeat Rams 2-0, End VCU's Five-Game Winning Streak

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 0, George Washington 2
  • Records: VCU (6-7-1, 4-1), George Washington (10-4-0, 5-0)
  • Location: Sports Backers Stadium – Richmond, Va.
  • The Short Story: VCU hosted George Washington in a battle for the top spot in the Atlantic-10 on Thursday night. Both teams entered the match 4-0 against conference rivals. The Colonials scored two first half goals to take a commanding lead. The Rams were unable to overcome the deficit as their four-game win streak came to an end.

How It Happened

  • The Colonials snuck one past keeper Emma Kruse in the 32nd minute to pull ahead late in the first half.
  • Eight minutes later, George Washington added another to make it a 2-0 match heading into the half.
  • The Rams came out of the break with a renewed energy and gave themselves several chances to come back.
  • Tori Burress nearly found Kailyn Slade early in the second, but the play resulted in a corner kick for VCU.
  • Later in the half, Christina Balacco was looking for Slade, but again the officials called for a VCU corner.
  • Slade later had a one on one chance, but the keeper came out to meet her, thwarting the attempt.
 Quotable
  • "We didn't bring the energy needed to get a result tonight. We allowed GW two good opportunities and they capitalized on both. If we think that effort will get us points moving forward we are sorely mistaken. Good teams will make you pay and that's exactly what GW did tonight." - Head Coach Lindsey Martin.

Up Next

  • The Rams travel to La Salle on Sunday to continue conference play. Game time in Philadelphia is set for 1 p.m.
