Burress, Rams take down Dayton, 3-2, for fifth straight win

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 3, Dayton 2
  • Records: VCU (6-6-1, 4-0 A-10), Dayton (5-8, 3-1 A-10)
  • Location: SportsBackers Stadium – Richmond, Va.
  • The Short Story: Junior Tori Burress scored her first two goals of her VCU career to spark the Rams' past defending conference champion, Dayton, 3-2, on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at SportsBackers. Senior Sharon Wojcik added a goal and an assist on the afternoon, while classmate Emma Kruse finished with five saves in the match.
How It Happened
  • VCU got on the board early and often with Kailyn Slade dribbling through the Dayton defense and finding Julia Suarez along the baseline. Suarez fed a cross into the box, which Burress headed into the far corner for a 1-0 lead, less than nine minutes into the contest.
  • Less than three minutes later, Wojick got through the Flyers backline and blasted a shot into the top of the net as the Rams' claimed a 2-0 advantage less than 12 minutes in.
  • Dayton would answer in the 18th minute with the league's leading scorer Ashley Campbell putting the Flyers on the board and cutting the VCU lead to one.
  • The Flyers would continue to pressure the VCU defense, but the Rams would hold strong and preserve the one-goal lead for the rest of the stanza.
  • Less than two minute into the second half, Slade got loose and ripped a shot towards the net, but the Dayton keeper was able to knock it down.
  • UD would turn up the offensive attack, but Kruse and the defense held strong.
  • Burress got on the board once again in the 65th minute after beautiful passing from Slade and Wojcik to give the Rams a 3-1 cushion.
  • Dayton got within one on another goal by Campbell in the 71st minute, but it wasn't enough as the Black & Gold held strong for its fifth straight victory.
