Rams drop 74-65 decision to La Salle

  • The Short Story: Despite a career-high from sophomore Chadarryl Clay, the VCU women's basketball team dropped a tough 74-65 decision at home to a feisty La Salle squad. Clay poured in 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Adaeze Alaeze and Camille Calhoun each added 15 points on the evening.
How It Happened
  • After trading baskets to start the game, La Salle put together an 8-0 run to take a 14-7 lead with 12:05 left in the first half.
  • A put back by Monnazjea Finney-Smith sparked a 7-0 VCU run that finished with a 14-14 tie with 10:07 remaining in the stanza.
  • The teams continued to trade baskets and headed to the locker room tied at 30-30.
  • With La Salle leading 42-39, the Rams put together an 8-2 run, capped off by back-to-back layups from Calhoun to grab a 47-44 advantage with just under 14 minutes remaining.
  • The Explorers responded with a 15-6 run that gave them a six-point lead they would never relinquish, eventually holding on for the 74-65 victory.
Beyond the Box Score
  • Melanie Royster has 85 career blocks. She is one shy of tying Courtney Hurt in fifth place. She is tied for seventh in single season blocks with 46. 
  • Second double-double of the season for Adaeze Alaeze. She has scored in the double-figures in four of the last five games. 
  • Clay's 19 points were a career-high
