  • Short Story: Behind a career performance from sophomore Isis Thorpe, the VCU Women's Basketball team took down longtime rival George Mason, 70-66, Wednesday night. 

How It Happened

  • The Rams battled tough in the first half, forcing 12 turnovers on George Mason.
  • Despite a late spark from the Patriots, VCU held a 34-28 advantage at the break.
  • George Mason rallied back in the second half when a 3-pointer from Sandra Ngoie put the Patriots within four, 47-43, with 13 minutes remaining.
  • Back-to-back 3-pointers from Thorpe capped a 9-0 run for the Rams to extend their lead to 58-45.
  • The final seconds were a nail-biter, with the Patriots cutting VCU's lead to two, 68-66. The Rams held off GMU's rally and secured the victory.
  • VCU capitalized on the turnovers Wednesday night, with 23 points coming off turnovers.
  • Adaeze Alaeze and Ashley Pegram added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Thorpe has had four steals on the night with Melanie Royster and Pegram each having three.

Beyond the Box Score

  • This was the 57th meeting between the two schools, as the series dates back to the 1975-76 season.
  • Royster is now 6th all-time in the VCU record books with 83 career blocks.
  • Alaeze has scored in double-figures in four of the last five games.
  • Thorpe matched her career-best of 26 points and 10 rebounds. That was her first career double-double.
