Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: Fordham 60, VCU 51
  • Records: VCU (12-6, 3-2), Fordham (13-5, 5-0)
  • Location: Rose Hill Gym – Bronx, NY
  • Short Story: The VCU Women's Basketball team fell to defending Atlantic 10 Champions Fordham on Sunday afternoon, 60-51. Ashley Pegram led the Rams with 16 points, while Melanie Royster pulled down a career-best 11 rebounds.

How It Happened

  • Despite VCU knocking down the first shot of the game credited to Adaeze Alaeze, Fordham took a lead that they would not relinquish.
  • Fordham's Samantha Clarke hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give her Rams squad a 27-18 advantage at the half.
  • Ashley Pegram scored 12 of VCU's 18 points in the first half. The sophomore finished with 16 points (8-of-13 from the field) and four rebounds.
  • The Rams began to chip away at Fordham's lead in the second half. Following a 3-pointer from Alaeze, VCU got within six, 43-37.
  • With mere seconds left on the clock, Isis Thorpe connected a shot from long range, but Fordham held on to take a 60-51 win, and maintain their unblemished mark in A10 play.

Quotable

  • "Fordham is obviously a very good team and when you turn the ball over and give them a bunch of different opportunities to score, and they are knocking down shots like that, it's hard to pull out a win." --Head Coach Beth O'Boyle
  • "I thought we had some good looks early on, but unfortunately we had some turnovers in our transition that didn't give us those points in the half court. They really pack it in and make those outside shots." --Head Coach Beth O'Boyle
  • "We will regroup and we have a big game against the Bonnies on Wednesday. We have to get back out there and make sure that we do some things a little more solid so we can pull off a win there." --Head Coach Beth O'Boyle

Beyond the Box Score

  • Ashlee Mitchell made her first start of the season and her second career start for the Rams.
  • Brittani Burgess recorded a career-best seven points.
  • This was the third-ever meeting between the two schools with Fordham holding the all-time series record at 3-0.

Up Next

  • VCU will return to New York to play at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday (January 21).  Game time is set for 7:00pm.
