DYER'S FIRST-HALF GOAL LIFTS VCU WOMEN'S SOCCER PAST DREXEL, 1-0

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 1, Drexel 0
  • Records: VCU (1-2-2), Drexel (1-3-0)
  • Location: VCU's SportsBackers Stadium, inside HDL, Inc. Athletic Village
  • The Short Story: Junior Gabby Dyer scored her first collegiate goal in the 33rd minute to lead the VCU women's soccer to their first win of the season with a 1-0 defeat of former CAA foe, Drexel. Sophomore Emma Kruse registered her eighth career shutout in goal.
How It Happened
  • VCU put the pressure on the Dragons early with the forward attack of Kailyn Slade and Maren Johansen combining for seven shots on the night.
  • Slade would create the chance for Dyer in the 33rd minute when she got loose on the right side and fired a shot at the Drexel keeper, which was knocked away. The rebound went to Tori Burress, who found Dyer at the top box. Dyer deposited her first collegiate goal in the back of the net for a 1-0 VCU lead.
  • Just over four minutes later, the Rams got free on a breakaway with Slade, Johansen and senior Alex Gogolin streaking at the Drexel keeper, but Slade's shot went just wide.
  • The Black & Gold would hold strong defensively, limiting the Dragons to just one shot on goal on the evening.
Up Next
  • VCU is back on the road on Sunday at 24th-ranked James Madison. Game time in Harrisonburg, Va. is set for 7 p.m.
