VCU Falls in Return Home, 2-1

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 2, Old Dominion 1
  • Records: VCU (3-5-1), ODU (4-3-0)
  • The Short Story: The Rams scored a late goal but it wasn't enough to overcome a two-goal deficit, so VCU fell to Old Dominion 2-1.

How it Happened:

  • Old Dominion's Sidney Rivera scored in the 49th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead. His goal came off of a penalty kick, his second attempt after the first was waved off.
  • The second goal of the night was scored by ODU's Christian Schroeer, who blasted a shot after finding some open space at the top of the box. Schroeer's goal came in the 63rd minute.
  • VCU senior Ritchie Duffie cut the deficit in half with his first goal of the season in the 80th minute. Duffie received a pass and flew by the ODU defense before maneuvering himself right by the goalie and burying his shot into a wide open goal.
  • With less than four minutes remaining, the Rams nearly tied it up on after Duffie's cross found Kharlton Belmar's heel. Belmar, with his back to the goal, deflected the pass right into the goalie's chest.

Up Next:

  • The Rams will hit the road for a Tuesday, September 30 matchup with defending national champion #3 Notre Dame before returning home on Saturday, October 4 to begin conference play. VCU's first Atlantic 10 opponent will be #20 George Mason, and that game will kick off at 7 pm. On Wednesday, October 8, the Rams will travel to play the Maryland Terrapins to round out their non-conference schedule.
