RAMS COMPLETE PERFECT WEEKEND WITH 3-0 DEFEAT OF AMERICAN

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 3, American 0
  • Records: VCU (3-3-2), American (3-5)
  • Location: VCU's SportsBackers Stadium, inside HDL, Inc. Athletic Village
  • The Short Story: Junior Sharon Wojcik scored in her second straight game to start the offensive outburst for the VCU women's soccer team, who completed a perfect weekend with a 3-0 defeat of American. Seniors Maren Johansen and Alex Gogolin also tallied goals on the afternoon.
How It Happened
  • The Rams went on the attack early and often with sophomore Kailyn Slade and junior Gabby Dyer both firing shots just off the mark in the first five minutes of the contest.
  • VCU's pressure continued and finally broke through in the 22nd minute when Gogolin dribbled through traffic and slid a pass to Wojcik, who fired a shot into the back of the net from just inside the box to give the Rams a 1-0 advantage.
  • Just over five minutes later, Johansen gathered the ball and fired a shot from 25 yards that slid into the top left corner of the net to extend VCU's lead to 2-0.
  • With just over two minutes left in the first half, Gogolin struck once again, this time, she dribbled around defenders and fired a goal of her own into the back of the net to give the Black & Gold a 3-0 halftime cushion.
  • VCU's stifling defense continued to dominate the Eagles, holding AU to just two shots on the afternoon. The Rams have now allowed just one goal in the past 360 minutes of action.
Up Next
  • The Rams return home on Friday, Sept. 19 when they host Penn at SportsBackers Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
