RAMS RALLY WITH LATE GOAL TO EARN 1-1 TIE AT ODU

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 1, Old Dominion 1 (2 OTs)
  • Records: VCU (0-1-2), ODU (0-2-1)
  • Location: ODU Soccer Complex – Norfolk, Va.
  • The Short Story: Senior Maren Johansen converted a penalty kick with 1:43 left on the regulation clock to help the VCU women's soccer team rally and earn a 1-1 tie against in-state rival Old Dominion. It was Johansen's fourth goal in the past two games. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Emma Kruse held strong in goal with four more saves.
How It Happened
  • ODU got on the board early as Jessie Klamut took a pass from Jordan Jones  and found the back of the net just 6:31 into the contest to give the Monarchs a 1-0 advantage.
  • The home team held onto their lead into the halftime break, but the Rams relentless second half effort would eventually break through.
  • VCU held a 14-2 advantage on shots and controlled the pace of play in the second half, finally drawing a penalty kick with under two minutes to play. Johansen stepped up and converted her second penalty kick in as many games and evened the score at 1-1.
  • The teams would combine for just five shots in the two overtime periods, with Kruse making two saves in the final 10 minutes.
Quotable
  • "We dug ourselves a hole early and battled back for the remainder of regulation. I felt like we threw the kitchen sink at them and were just unable to equalize until the last minute. ODU did a good job of getting organized numbers behind the ball and made our lives difficult. The tie was well deserved and hopefully we learned a few lessons tonight. We are still searching for that full 90 minute performance at this point. We are excited for Sunday to return home and take on Clemson." – Head Coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel
Up Next
  • The Rams open up their 2014 home slate on Sunday, August 31 when they host ACC foe Clemson in a 1 p.m. tilt.
