Two Second Half Goals Help Rams Take Down Spiders In A10 Tournament

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 2, Richmond 1
  • Records: VCU (10-4-5), UR (9-9-2)
  • The Short Story: Senior Jackie Ernest scored a goal in the game's closing moments to give the Rams a victory in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

How it Happened:

  • Richmond struck first in this match, after a cross somehow navigated its way through the box and past multiple VCU defenders, landing near a Spider who easily put it away towards the far post for the game's first goal.
  • After the first 45, the Spiders really seemed to have control of the game, holding VCU to just one shot while generating all of the significant scoring chances.
  • The Rams tied the game up in the 61st minute on a goal from senior Brianne Moore. Junior Sharon Wojcik weaved a pass from near the goal line into the box and found Moore's foot, who booted it past the goalkeeper to the far post to tie the game.
  • In the 88th minute, junior Kailyn Slade fed a through ball to Ernest, who expertly weaved her way through every Richmond defender that was in her way and quickly flicked a shot by the goalie to give the Rams a late 2-1 lead.

Quotable:

  • "I am so incredibly proud of our effort and never say die mentality tonight. We struggled to combine in the first half and a Richmond got the better of us. It was a complete turnaround in the 2nd half. We were able to dominate possession and pin them in with exception to a few counterattacks. Breezy had a clinical finish to tie us up and then Jackie who has been brilliant of late was able to receive a ball in the box, turn on a dime and fire to the bottom right corner. The kids deserved this one tonight and I couldn't be happier for them and for in particular our seniors." –Head coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel
  • "It was a huge comeback win. We knew Richmond wasn't going to just let us have it, and the first half was tough. But we were able to pull together in the second half with the wind. It was a massive effort from the entire team and we were able to battle until the end." –Senior Jackie Ernest

Up Next:
