VCU Defeats #20 George Mason 3-0 in Atlantic 10 Opener

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 3, #20 George Mason 0
  • Records: VCU (4-6-1), GMU (7-1-2)
  • The Short Story: Senior forward Kharlton Belmar scored two goals en route to a 3-0 dismantling of #20 George Mason in the Rams' first Atlantic 10 game of the season.

How it Happened:

  • Belmar got the scoring started early, netting his third goal in the third minute to put the Rams up 1-0. A shot on goal from senior Jose Manel just moments earlier bounced right back to Belmar, who buried the rebound.
  • His second goal of the night came in the 16th minute. Senior Ritchie Duffie received a throw in and found Belmar open just a few yards in front of the goal.
  • Sophomore Dakota Barnathan added to VCU's lead with a header off of a corner kick from senior Mario Herrera Meraz. Barnathan's second goal of the season made the score 3-0 .
  • VCU didn't just have a stellar offensive performance, but the defense played great as well, conceding just five total shots, none of which were on goal.

From Coach Giffard:

  • "I was proud of the boys this week for continuing to improve. Some of the things we worked on in training came out tonight as I thought our front group was much more dangerous."
  • "Now we have to quickly turn our attention to a very good Maryland team on Wednesday night."
