VCU Wins the Battle of the Rams Over Fordham, 1-0

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 1, Fordham 0
  • Records: VCU (5-3-3), FU (6-5-0)
  • The Short Story: The Rams extend their five-match unbeaten streak thanks to a goal from Senior Alex Gogolin. VCU beats Fordham on the road by a score of 1-0.

How it Happened:

  • Gogolin's goal came in the 20th minute and is her second on the season, her other came against American on September 14. Senior Maren Johansen was credited with the assist.
  • Overall, VCU was outshot to the tune of 10-7, but the Rams definitely had better quality opportunities, recording more shots on goal and taking eight corner kicks compared to Fordham's one.
  • It was the fifth shutout for Junior goalkeeper Emma Kruse, who has allowed just two goals in her last seven games.
  • VCU's defense held Fordham to just four shots in the second half, and none in the last 15 minutes of play.

Quotable

  • "I didn't think we looked as sharp today as we would have liked, but it's hard to complain too much about a conference road win. Alex had a great finish 20 minutes in that ultimately was the difference maker for us. I'd like our work rate and quality on the ball to get back up by Sunday as we know La Salle is going to be a tough matchup as always." -Head coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel

Up Next:

  • The Rams will take the pitch next on Sunday, October 5 at La Salle for another afternoon game at 1 p.m. Next, they'll host Rhode Island on October 12 in the first of four consecutive home games. The Rhode Island game starts at 3 p.m.
