THE BASICS
  • Jessica Young, Janelle Sykes and Kalah Jones combined for 33 of VCU's 45 kills as the Rams cruised past conference-mate George Mason Friday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
  • Young led the way with 12 kills for VCU and hit .346. Sykes was also efficient, hitting .389 on the way to a 10-kill night.
  • Senior setter Cecilia Aragao kept the Rams running smoothly on offense and dished out 36 assists. She also dug seven balls and booked a pair of blocks.
  • VCU outhit the Patriots .267 to .047.
  • Freshman libero Rebekah Strange provided 11 digs for VCU.
  • No Patriot recorded more than six kills.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • VCU has won two straight matches and nine of its last 11.
  • The Rams have defeated George Mason in each of the last three meetings between the former CAA rivals. VCU is 10-5 against the Patriots since 2005.
  • VCU is 5-1 at home this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • George Mason showed some early fight and took a 13-12 lead midway through the opening set. But kills by Jones and Sykes amid a 3-0 win shifted the tide toward VCU. The Rams would eventually stretch their lead to 23-17 with an extended 11-4 run.
  • The Patriots never seriously threatened again in the match. VCU hit .424 and .250 in the second and third sets, respectively, on the way to healthy victory margins.

A critical Atlantic 10 Conference showdown awaits Sunday against George Washington at the Siegel Center. The Colonials are 5-1 in league play, a game ahead of the Rams. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
