Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore Kristin Boyd
(Wilmington, N.C.) blasted 11 kills, but Virginia
Commonwealth University fell to George Washington, 3-1 Tuesday
night in a non-conference tilt at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Boyd provided her 11 kills in 26 swings and hit .269 to pace
the Rams (3-15), but VCU hit just .121 for the match. Sophomore
Jhessica Martins (Uberlanoia, Brazil) added nine
kills and 10 digs for the Rams.
Rachael Goss led three George Washington players in double figure
kills with 15. Lauren Whyte added 14 kills and 12 digs. Candace
Silva-Martin collected 18 digs to lead a 63-dig effort for the
Colonials (12-6). GW forced VCU to hit less than .200 in all four
sets.
The Rams led by a 19-14 margin in the first set, only to watch
George Washington close the frame on an 11-4 run. Goss had three
kills during the rush and Silva-Martin shut the door on the Rams
with a service ace to clinch the set.
VCU hit .067 in the second set on the way to a 25-20 loss and 2-0
match deficit. Four blocks in set three, including three by
senior Kelsie Clegg (Boise, Idaho), helped the
Black and Gold stymie the Colonial offense to the tune of a -.107
hitting percentage in a 25-15 win.
However, George Washington righted the ship and hit a blistering
.378 in the fourth and final set, a 25-17 Colonial win.
Clegg added seven kills and five blocks for VCU, while freshman
setter Ciara Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.) kicked in 26
assists and 12 digs.
The Rams return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 2 when they hit the
road for Williamsburg, Va. and take on longtime Colonial Athletic
Association rival William & Mary at 7 p.m. at Kaplan
Arena.
