Box Score
DAYTON, Ohio – Senior Mariel Frey
(Lititz, Pa.) blasted 11 kills for Virginia Commonwealth University
in a 3-0 (25-10, 25-8, 25-15) loss to 21st-ranked Dayton Saturday
night at the Frericks Center.
Dayton is the Rams' first ranked opponent this season, but all
three of VCU's matches have come against schools that were at least
receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll.
Frey hit .308 and committed just three hitting errors, but the
Rams could get little else going on offense or defense. Frey's
total accounted for half of the Rams' kills. Sophomore Marisa Low
(Carlsbad, Calif.) collected eight digs.
Dayton (2-0), which reached the second round of the NCAA
Tournament in 2009, hit .389 for the match. Rachel Krabacher and
Becky Novacek led the Flyers with eight kills each, while
All-American middle blocker Lindsay Fletemer had seven kills and
five blocks.
VCU returns to the Frericks Center in Dayton on Sunday, Aug. 29 to
face Arizona State at noon. The Sun Devils dropped a 3-1 decision
to Dayton Saturday afternoon.
