Matt Cannady enters his eighth season overall, and fifth as assistant coach with VCU in 2019. Cannady previously served as an assistant at his alma mater, Bellermine, from 2012-15. A standout at Bellarmine from 2006-09, Cannady originally joined the Rams in 2010 as a graduate assistant before being promoted to a volunteer assistant for the next two seasons.
Cannady has helped VCU to numerous top 25 victories, mutliple Atlantic 10 Championship apperances and earning a No. 16 overall seed in 2017 and a double bye in the NCAA Tournament. During his stints on the Rams' sideline, VCU has also had numerous MLS SuperDraft Selections and all-conference honors. The Rams also were the Atlantic 10 runner-up and the No. 14 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament in 2012 prior to Cannady's return to his alma mater.
Following three seasons with VCU (2010-12), Cannady returned to Bellarmine as an assistant coach. During his first season at Bellarmine, the Knights went 8-6-4 while posting its ninth straight winning season. In 2014, the program earned its eighth straight appearance in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
The Belleville, Ill. native earned his degree in business administration from Bellarmine and holds his Master’s from VCU’s Center for Sport Leadership.
