VCU 79, Louisville 74 (Nov. 19, 1999) – Siegel Center Opening Night
The Stuart C. Siegel Center opened a year later than expected, but in the end, the Rams’ dramatic win over Louisville proved to be the perfect way to christen the building.
Constructed for $30 million, the Siegel Center marked a new era for VCU Basketball, which had long sought an on-campus home.
Opening night couldn’t have been much more memorable. The Rams trailed 49-29 late in the first half before mounting a stunning comeback. Bo Jones scored all 19 of his points in the second half, including the go-ahead bucket with 2:50 remaining.
Since that night, the Siegel Center has served as the epicenter of the program, and scores of similarly unforgettable games have piled up over the years as the Rams rose to prominence.
The Siegel Center has also become a house of horrors for opponents. In 18 seasons in this building, VCU has crafted a remarkable 235-36 record, a winning percentage of .867. VCU’s season opener with Grambling State this season will mark the Rams’ 100th consecutive sellout in this building, a streak that stretches back to the 2010-11 campaign.
