VCU 59, Virginia 56 (Nov. 12, 2013)
VCU fans waited 15 years for a crack at Virginia, and they were not disappointed.
Treveon Graham buried a long 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds left to give the 14th-ranked Rams a win at 25th-ranked Virginia at John Paul Jones Arena. Graham finished with a game-high 22 points in VCU’s first true road win over a ranked opponent since 1994.
It was the first meeting between the two schools, roughly an hour apart, since the 1998-99 season and the win was VCU’s first in the series since 1987.
Virginia led by as many as seven points with just over seven minutes remaining, but a tip-in by Juvonte Reddic and a 3-pointer by Jordan Burgess pulled VCU within 55-54 with 2:16 remaining. With 1:17 left a Graham layup pushed the Rams ahead 56-55. Following a Malcolm Brogdon free throw with 10 seconds left, VCU’s Rob Brandenberg drove right and pitched back to Graham on the deep left wing for the eventual game-winner.
The win later catapulted VCU to No. 10 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
