The 1984-85 VCU Rams
Led by a quartet of ironman seniors and their firebrand coach, VCU blazed an unprecedented trail during the 1984-85 season.
Coach J.D. Barnett, in what would prove to be his final VCU season, directed the Rams to a 26-6 record and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Seniors Calvin Duncan, Rolando Lamb, Mike Schlegel and Michael Brown were the driving forces as VCU climbed the top 25 polls. While Lamb enjoyed a breakout campaign, Schlegel provided a tournament MVP effort to push the Rams to the Sun Belt Championship that March.
VCU knocked off Marshall in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to seventh-seeded Alabama in the second round. Despite the loss, the Rams finished the season ranked 11th in the final Associated Press Top 25 Poll, a program record that stood until 2011.
