SPIRIT OF '78 SENDS RAMS TO NIT

1978 – Rams Claim NIT Berth
Led by a pair of future NBA players in Edmund Sherod and Gerald Henderson, as well as arguably the best center in team history, the 1977-78 VCU team set a school record with 24 wins and earned the program’s first postseason berth – an invitation to the NIT.

VCU, coached by Dana Kirk, won 18 of its first 20 games to open the season and later defeated Georgetown in first round of the ECAC Tournament.

Henderson completed his outstanding VCU career by averaging 16.1 points that season, while Ren Watson controlled the paint with averages of 12.4 points, 11.9 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game. Sherod, a freshman, added 10. 3 points and led the team in assists.
