The short story: Senior middle blocker Tori Baldwin recorded 10 kills and hit .500 for VCU, but George Mason snapped the Rams' 13-match win streak Saturday in Fairfax.

OPENING VOLLEY

  • VCU junior middle blocker Jasmin Sneed supplied eight kills and five blocks, while hitting .467
  • Junior opposite Gina Tuzzolo added eight kills for the Rams, while senior outside hitter Vicky Giommarini and senior opposite Julia Adler provided six each
  • Junior setter Dajah Ard was credited with 19 assists and nine digs for the Black and Gold
  • ShaLi Niu led the Patriots to victory with 16 kills, 15 digs and two blocks

THE DIFFERENCE

  • George Mason limited VCU's league-leading net defense to just six blocks
  • The Patriots outhit VCU .278-.200 and owned a 46-37 advantage in digs
  • Mason was able to take control after edging out the Rams in two hotly contested early sets. With the first set knotted at 22-all, Niu ripped three kills in a four-play span to push the Patriots to a 25-23 win. In the second, Niu and Maddie French snapped a 24-24 tie with back-to-back kills to hand Mason a 26-24 win and a 2-0 match lead

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • VCU's last loss to an Atlantic 10 Conference foe came on Nov. 19, 2016, a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Dayton in the A-10 Tournament semifinals. The Rams had won 28 straight against conference opponents
  • Sneed continued her march to become the second VCU player with 500 blocks (behind teammate Baldwin). She added five blocks Saturday and has 481 for her three-year career, second in school history
