KANDLER, BALDWIN TURN BACK TRIBE IN VCU HOME OPENER

The short story: Senior Alica Kandler delivered a match-high 12 kills, while junior Tori Baldwin led all players with 14.5 points as VCU turned in its most complete performance of the young season in a sweep of William & Mary.

OPENING VOLLEY

  • The Rams were in control for nearly the whole match and hit .283 with 14 blocks. William & Mary hit just .052 and produced four blocks.
  • William & Mary had no answer for the 6-foot-3 Baldwin in the middle. The Liberty, N.C. native blasted 10 kills and hit .643. Defensively, she supplied seven blocks, including a pair of solos.
  • Kandler contributed 10 of her 12 kills in the first two sets at the Rams took control. She hit .400 in 25 swings.
  • Strange, who was named "Best Libero" last weekend at the Texas A&M Invitational, roamed the back row on the way to a season-high 18 digs.
  • Sophomore Jasmin Sneed added six kills and six blocks for VCU.
  • Sydney Biniak connected for nine kills to lead the Tribe.

THE DIFFERENCE

  • VCU's front line blocking contributed heavily to William & Mary's 21 hitting errors. The Tribe produced just 26 kills on the night.
  • The Rams were dominant in nearly every faced of the match. VCU outdug William & Mary 43-34, outblocked its opponent 14-4 and served up four aces, compared to the Tribe's three.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • With her 18 digs, Strange moved into sixth place on VCU's career list with 1,325.
  • VCU has won 15 of the last 18 meetings against the Tribe, a dominant stretch that dates to the 2006 season. VCU has won the last seven contests between the two schools.

NEXT UP
VCU will hit the road and head to the Bowling Green/Toledo Invitational Sept. 1-2. The Rams will kick off the weekend against Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 1 at 11 a.m at Bowling Green. VCU will then head north a short distance to Toledo, where it will meet the host Rockets at 7 p.m.
