GIOMMARINI, KANDLER LEAD RAMS TO WEEKEND SWEEP

The short story: Junior Alica Kandler and freshman Vicky Giommarini combined for 20 kills and four aces as VCU turned away George Mason Saturday night in Fairfax.
 
OPENING VOLLEY
  • VCU completed a sweep of the Northern Virginia/D.C. segment of the Atlantic 10 with Saturday's win. The Rams are now a combined 4-0 against George Mason and George Washington this season.
  • With the win, the Rams surpassed their victory total from last season.
  • Giommarini led the Rams with 11 kills and hit .241. Kandler, meanwhile, added nine kills. She also provided three aces and has served up eight in her past two matches.
  • Sophomore middle Tori Baldwin also contributed eight kills, while hitting .385, and four blocks.
  • Freshman defensive specialist Madalon Simpson picked up 18 digs for the Rams.
  • Tiffany Clarke ripped 11 kills for George Mason.
THE DIFFERENCE
  • VCU hit .233 in the match, including .320 after the first set.
  • The Rams served up six more aces Saturday and have recorded 17 in their last two matches.
  • The Rams were dominant from the start of the second set to the final point. VCU surrendered the lead in a set just twice in the final three frames.
