TALKING POINTS
  • Cecilia Aragao recorded her first career triple-double (kills-assists-digs) and Romana Kriskova hammered 25 kills as VCU rallied past Colgate Friday at the Courtyard Midtown Invitational.
  • Aragao filled up the box score like few Rams before her. The junior from Recife, Brazil hit .474 and notched a career-high 10 kills to go with her 40 assists, 11 digs, five blocks and two service aces.
  • Kriskova, who entered the day sixth nationally in kills per set, hit .254 and added eight digs. It was the fifth time this season she's topped 20 kills in a match.
  • The Rams trailed 10-8 in the fifth set before a pair of Kriskova kills knotted the contest at 10-all. A short time later, the Rams closed in for the victory with a kill by Kalah Jones and a match-clinching service ace by Aragao.
  • The Rams hit just .042 in the first two sets, but gathered themselves to hit .221 the rest of the way.
  • Defensively, VCU outblocked Colgate 11-5 and received double-digit digs from Amanda Love (18), Becca Cazares (12) and Aragao.

QUOTABLES FROM COACH JODY ROGERS

  • "I've got to give it to this team, they fight. We were slow out of the gate and needed to play catch-up all night, but they fight."
  • "Cecilia Aragao had an amazing game. she kind of carried us through. But now we need to refocus for tomorrow."
TURNING POINT
  • Down 2-1 in the match and 18-13 in the fourth set, VCU staged a furious rally to tie the contest. Following a kill by Aragao that pulled VCU within 19-16, sophomore Saige Gallop ripped three straight kills, and a bad Colgate set gave the Rams a 20-19 advantage. Colgate rallied to retake the lead 24-22, but the Rams ripped off the set's final four points, including two Kriskova kills and a double block from Aragao and Nora Reed.
