RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University freshman Ciara Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.) is headed to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Feb. 25-27, where she'll vie for a spot on the U.S. Junior National Volleyball Team.
Brown is no stranger to the U.S. Juniors program. Each of the last two years, she has competed in U.S. Juniors tryouts, which led to a trip to the High Performance International Tournament in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. last summer. as a member of the A2 White squad. The A2 White team was one of several Juniors teams selected from the U.S. National Team pool and competed against international competition.
In 2009, Brown earned a roster spot with the A2 Red team that won the Junior Women's Pool at the High Performance Tournament. For her efforts, Brown was named to the All-Tournament Team.
During the tryout, players will focus on a number of positional drills, as well as play in a number of games to showcase their skills. The U.S. Junior National team will be selected later this spring, as will its feeder squads – which Brown is also eligible for – before facing off against the tournament circuit this summer.
"It's a chance to compete in a highly competitive environment against the highest level of competition," said the 18-year-old Brown.
Brown, a 5-11 setter, was named to the Colonial Athletic Association's All-Rookie Team in 2010 after averaging a team-high 6.45 assists per set. Brown also averaged 1.72 digs and 0.53 kills per set for the Rams, who reached the semifinal of the CAA Tournament this season.
