RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University Volleyball team successfully kicked off the 2010 season Sunday with the annual Black and Gold scrimmage at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
Sophomore Kristin Boyd (Wilmington, N.C.) led all players with eight kills for the Gold squad, while senior Mariel Frey (Lititz, Pa.) blasted seven kills for the Black team.
Each VCU squad played one set against an outstanding team of Ram alums that included former All-CAA players Ludmila Francescatto and Ivana Rich, as well as Cat Juson, Lauren Nussman and Meghan Boyle. In the third and final set of the day, the Black team defeated the Gold, 25-20.
CAA All-Rookie selection Marisa Low (Carlsbad, Calif.) provided five aces for the Black team against the Gold, keying a 10-0 run on the way to the victory.
The Rams also got outstanding performances from senior Kelsie Clegg (Boise, Idaho), who had five kills and four blocks for the Black squad, as well as sophomore Jhessica Martins (Uberlanoia, Brazil) who added three kills and three service aces for the Gold.
All in all, VCU sixth-year Head Coach James Finley appeared happy with his team's progress.
"It was a good day, very exciting," Finley said. "We worked through the jitters and were able to focus in the third set. I thought both teams played really well, so that part was good, to watch them problem solve and work together. I was also really proud of our alumni team. They came out and played really well and made it fun."
The Rams begin regular season play on Friday, Aug. 27 when they meet Ohio University at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio at 11 a.m.
