RICHMOND, Va. – VCU Track & Field athletes Kayla Smith and Aliyah Newman were honored by the Atlantic 10 Conference on Tuesday when they were announced as the Women's Track Performer of the Week and the Women's Field Performer of the Week respectively.
Smith, a freshman from Ashburn, Va., earned the honor after a weekend in which won the 400m Run at the Miami Hurricane Invitational. Her time of 53.94 currently ranks first in the A-10 and second overall in the East Region. Smith also competed on the Rams 4x400m Relay Team that took home first place with a time of 3:41.96, which is also the top mark in the conference.
Newman, a sophomore out of Chester, Va., won the distinction after placing second in the Triple Jump at the Miami Hurricane Invitational. Her mark of 12.51 meters currently ranks first in the A-10 and sixth overall in the East Region.
The Rams will be back in action on Friday, March 23, when they host the VCU Ram Invite at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va.
