The Short Story: VCU Women's Track & Field competed in their final indoor meet prior to the start of the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships over the weekend. Senior Nichelle Scott, junior Kayla Smith, and the Rams 4x400m Relay Team (A) led the way for VCU, as each broke VMI facility records in their respective events.

How It Happened (Day One)

  • Kayla Smith set a new VMI facility record and won the 400m Run on Friday, posting a time of 54.92. Senior Taylor Watkins also earned a top-3 finish in the event, recording a time of 57.61.
  • Junior Judith "Marley" White placed second in the 1000m Run, posting a time of 2:56.24 which set a new personal best. Junior Ashley Brown finished fourth with a time of 2:58.80.
  • Senior Camora Sanders and freshman Shannon Moise placed first and second in the Shot Put on Friday, posting throws of 13.69m and 13.24m respectively.
  • Junior Khoi Banks earned a fourth place finish in the 60m Hurdles after posting a time of 8.87.
  • Senior Latrice Morris placed fifth in the 60m Run, recording a time of 7.74.

How It Happened (Day Two)

  • Nichelle Scott set a new VMI facility record with her performance in the 800m Run on Saturday. Her mark of 2:09.25 was more than seven seconds faster than the second place finisher.
  • VCU's 4x400m Relay Team (A) broke the VMI facility record time for the event, after Kayla Smith, Nichelle Scott, Taylor Watkins, and Kara Lyles combined to post a time of 3:45.10.
  • Junior Emily Mulhern placed second in the 1-Mile Run after posting a new personal best time of 4:57.41.
  • The Rams had a strong showing in the 500m Run, having three athletes place in the top five. Junior Kara Lyles won the event with a time of 1:15.42, while Senior Ashley Greenlee finished close behind with a time of 1:15.64. Freshman Channelle Hodges eanred a fifth place finish after recording a time of 1:17.77.
  • Kayla Smith set a new peronal best in the 200m Run, recording a time of 24.57.
  • Kara Lyles set a new personal best in the Long Jump, posting a leap of 5.64m to place third.

What's Next

The Rams will take a week break from competition in preparation for the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships, which is set to begin in Fairfax, Va. on Feb. 23.
