Richmond, Va. - Three Rams qualified to compete in the NCAA East Preliminary meet taking place May 24-26. The athletes, who all come from the women's squad, will compete in three separate events. Aliyah Newman, Olivia Coopwood, and Camora Sanders each posted strong enough performances during the Spring season to earn an opportunity at the regional meet in Tampa, Fla. The merit of qualification for the meet is being listed in the top-48 of an event nationally.
Newman, a native of Chesterfield, Va., qualified in the triple jump after breaking the school record during the Atlantic 10 Championships meet. The freshman also stood out in the Fall, being selected to the All-Rookie team. In the Spring, Newman led all Atlantic 10 triple jumpers with her personal best 12.79m mark.
Fredericksburg, Va. native Coopwood will represent VCU in the 400 meter hurdles. The senior also led the conference with her 59.53 time, which she recorded during the conference championships en route to a first place finish. This was Coopwood's first year at VCU after spending most of her collegiate career at Coastal Carolina.
Sanders, the junior out of Pompano Beach, Fla., will represent the Rams in the discus throw. Like her teammates, Sanders shattered her previous best during the conference championships to record the top mark in the Atlantic 10. The 50.14m mark was 3.73m higher than her previous best.
A preview of the meet and start times will be released prior to the meet next week.
