RICHMOND, Va. – VCU Track and Field freshman Kayla Smith was named Atlantic 10 Rookie Performer of the Week as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Smith competed at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational in Lynchburg, Virginia over the weekend and broke the meet and facility record in the 400-meter run. The Ashburn, Virginia native set a time of 55.95 seconds. The time is a personal record for Smith is currently the third-fastest Atlantic 10 time in the event.
The freshman has seen success all season, finishing first in the 200-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay at the ETSU Invitational on Jan. 14. Smith's 200-meter time qualifies as the second fastest time in the Atlantic 10 this season.
Smith and the Rams return to the track this weekend at the Villanova Invitational in Staten Island, N.Y. and will compete at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 18.
