RICHMOND, Va. – It's not unusual for most freshman student-athletes to hit a wall towards the end of their first collegiate seasons. De'Nisha Smith of VCU women's track & field doesn't fit into that category.
Smith had two top-four finishes at the Kentucky Relays this past weekend to earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors.
In the 400m hurdles, Smith barely missed the school record en route to a third place finish in the event. Her time of 1:01.86 was less than half a second off her own school record, which she set last month at the Fred Hardy Invitational.
VCU will head to the prestigious Penn Relays this week before preparing for the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championships in Amherst, Mass. on May 3-4.
