RICHMOND, Va. – Freshman Ariel Briales left quite a first impression in her first outdoor meet of her collegiate career.

Briales laced them up for the first ever time in the 3000-meter steeplechase and took home the victory at this past weekend's 2014 VCU Invite at SportsBackers Stadium. Her time of 11:25.75 came within a half of a second of VCU's 11-year old school record.

For her performance, the Virginia Beach, Va. native was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week.

"This weekend, Ariel showed us all the ability she can bring to the steeplechase for our team over the next four years," Head Coach Jon Riley said. "When we brought her here we had this event in mind specifically. The steeple is one of the most difficult events in the A10 and she is determined to continue putting in the hard work to become a top athlete there."

Briales and her teammates stay in town this weekend when they compete at the Fred Hardy Invitational on the campus of the University of Richmond on Friday and Saturday.
