NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – At this rate, the Atlantic 10 office may start naming the award "The Kiara Porter Athlete of the Week award."
After yet another school-record breaking dash, junior Kiara Porter of the VCU women's track & field team was named the Atlantic 10 Athlete of the Week for the third time in the past four weeks.
Porter blistered the track at the Penn State National Invitational, winning the 400-meter dash in a time of 52.99, which shaved nearly a half-second off her own school record in the event. The time is currently the fourth fastest 400m time in the country.
"Kiara had probably the most impressive performance of her career this weekend," Head Coach Jon Riley said. "She has developed an impressive streak of victories that will be put to the test next week when we go to the Armory in New York City where we will face the deepest fields we will see all season. She is preparing to qualify for the NCAA indoor championships and we believe that this weekend's time will give her a great shot at doing so. The competition next week will give her an opportunity to face many of the competitors she will see at NCAAs when she qualifies."
On the year, Porter has five individual victories in four weeks of competition. She currently owns a top-35 time in the 200m (32nd – 24.03), 300m (2nd – 37.92), 400m (4th – 52.99) and 500m (10th – 1:13.54).
Next week, Porter and the Rams had the Armory in New York City to compete in the prestigious New Balance Invitational.
