NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU Track and Field's busy weekend was rewarded with two Atlantic 10 Conference weekly awards on Monday. Sophomore Kiara Porter was named Atlantic 10 Women's Co-Performer of the Week, while freshman Xavier Waller was named the Men's Rookie of the Week.
Porter had a record breaking weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational. The Yorktown, Va. native started the weekend by breaking the school record with a run of 23.28 seconds in the 200 meter, finishing in second place. On Saturday, Porter set a personal record with a time of 53.11 seconds to win the 400-meter race. The time is the best A-10 time this season and No. 10 in the East Region.
The sophomore then continued her strong weekend in the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays. Porter ran the second-leg of the 4x100-meter relay that ran a season-best 45.75 seconds and finished second at the Vanderbilt Invitational. She also was a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that set a new school record and won the race with a time of 3:41.90.
Waller, who competed at the New Captain's Classic and Multi-Events, won the decathlon with a personal-best score of 5,349 points. The Lynchburg, Va. native finished in the top three places in seven of the 10 events and also won the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter dash on his way to the total decathlon title.
Porter and Waller become the third and fourth VCU student-athletes to take home Atlantic 10 weekly awards during the spring season.
VCU concludes its regular season at the Penn Relays this weekend, April 26-27. The 2013 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships are set for May 4-5 at Charlotte.
