NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Without ever playing a match in the Atlantic 10, the VCU men's and women's tennis teams have already earned the respect of their conference foes. Both programs were selected to win the conference in the preseason poll, voted on by league coaches and announced Friday.
The men's team garnered 12-of-the-14 first place votes. George Washington, who has won back-to-back A-10 championships, collected the remaining two first place votes and was predicted to finish second.
VCU, who made its 19 NCAA Tournament in the last 21 years, won the Colonial Athletic Association title last year. The Rams were a No. 2 seed and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
The women's team received 15-of-the-16 possible first place votes. Richmond, who has won four straight Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championships, was picked to finish second.
VCU won the CAA Championship two of the past three years and has made 13 straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Last season, the Rams were the No. 3 seed in the Charlottesville Regional.
