WAKE FOREST, N.C. – The VCU women's tennis team was back in action over the weekend, competing in the Wake Forest Invitational.
Highlighting the Rams play was senior Alex Bara (pictured), who reached the finals of the Flight A singles bracket, while the duo of sophomores Daria Yakavleva and Olga Terteac advanced to the championship in Flight B doubles action. Inclement weather moved the majority of play indoors.
Top-seeded Alex Bara defeated UNC Wilmington's Christina Lee (6-0, 6-1) in the opener before topping Virginia's Caryssa Peretz (6-2, 7-5) and fourth-seeded Dominika Zaparazna from Marshall. Bara eventually fell to No. 2 seed Kayla Duncan of Wake Forest in the final (7-5, 6-1).
In doubles action, the second-seeded combo of Yakavleva and Terteac picked up victories against UNCW's Christina Lee/Alyssa Ritch (8-5), East Tennessee State's Marine Wieliczko/Diana Navrostska (8-4), fourth-seeded Shannon Betts/Courtney Rauscher of Virginia Tech (8-3) before falling to Louisville's Amelia Harris/Manuela Velaszquez in the final.
VCU is back in action Oct. 7-9 at the Hampton Roads Invitational in Newport News, Va.
