PALO ALTO, Calif. – Virginia Commonwealth University's doubles team of senior Kateryna Yergina and junior Alex Bara rallied in the second set Thursday afternoon but fell 6-0, 7-5 against fifth-ranked University of Miami's Bianca Eichkorn and Anna Bartenstein in the opening round of the NCAA Doubles Championship at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Miami took the first set 6-0 and jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second before the Rams battled back to win four straight games and pulled ahead 5-4. The lead didn't last long though as the Hurricanes' pair closed out the match with three wins.
"I'm proud of the way our girls fought back in the second set, but ultimately, they showed why they are ranked in the top five," Associate Head Coach Yana Carollo said. "Alex and Kateryna put together a solid spring season. Unfortunately, we ran into a better opponent today."
VCU earned an automatic berth in the NCAA Doubles Championship as the Colonial Athletic Association's top doubles combination after posting a 16-8 regular season ledger at the top doubles spot for the Black & Gold. Along the way, Yergina and Bara defeated two ranked opponents, including 11th-ranked Sandhya Nagaraj and Sanaa Bhambri on March 12.
Miami's Eichkorn and Bartenstein improve to 32-4 on the year with a 25-2 record in dual match play. The victory was their 14th straight and 20th in their last 21 matches, including a 15-3 record mark against ranked opponents.
