RAMS GO 2-FOR-2 IN PENNSYLVANIA TRIP WITH WINS OVER PENN STATE AND PRINCETON

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The temperature was colder and there was still some snow on the ground, but that didn't cool off the red-hot Virginia Commonwealth University women's tennis team in their weekend trip to Pennsylvania.

Led by senior Kateryna Yergina and junior Alex Bara, the 23rd-ranked Rams picked up a pair of 4-3 wins over Penn State and Princeton to run their winning streak to eight and improve their overall record to 13-1.

"We battled two tough opponents this weekend. Even though we didn't play our best tennis, we fought hard enough to get two wins," Head Coach Paul Kostin said.

On Friday afternoon, the Black & Gold swept the doubles action to grab an early lead and singles victories by Yergina and Bara quickly brought VCU within just one point of securing the match victory.

However, Penn State rallied with two singles win off their own before freshman Olga Terteac defeated the Nittany Lions' Sarah Henderson, 6-0, 6-2 at the sixth doubles position to give the Rams the win.

Saturday saw the Black & Gold once again grab the doubles point and once again Yergina and Bara extended the lead with victories at the second and fourth doubles spot.

The 38th-ranked Tigers would battle though, but eventually sophomore standout Josefin Hjertquist locked down the 13th win for the Rams with a 6-2, 6-4 at the top singles spot.

VCU returns to action next Saturday when they host in-state rival Virginia Tech in an 11 a.m. showdown.
