BARA, RAMS ROLL TO TWO WINS ON FINAL DAY OF VCU 4-1 INVITATIONAL

RICHMOND, Va. - For the second straight season, the Virginia Commonwealth University women's tennis team has gotten off to a blistering start after picking up two victories on the final day of the VCU 4-1 Invitational.

Led by the play of junior Ana Bara, the Rams ripped off a 5-0 victory over Norfolk State and a 4-1 win over conference foe UNC Wilmington to improve their season mark to a perfect 5-0.

"It was a good weekend to start off the year," Head Coach Paul Kostin said. "We just have to keep working and getting better each day in order to accomplish our long-term goals."

Against Norfolk State, the Black & Gold dropped a total of just four games in a rout of their in-state rival. Bara blew past Gabbi Jonsson in the top spot, 6-0, 6-0 to go along with the doubles tandem of Josefin Hjertquist and Kateryna Yergina, who swept their match, 6-0, 6-0.

The underclassmen trio of Daria Yakavleva, Olga Terteac and Manuela Pieztuch rounded out the sweep with straight set victories on the singles side.

In the match-up against the Seahawks, Alex Bara and Yakavleva teamed to get the Rams started on the right track with a 6-2, 6-2 doubles victory over Chelsea Kahle and Kelly Cameron.

Yergina moved VCU's lead to 2-0 with a straight set, 6-3, 6-0 win over Angela Sekely and Ana Bara locked up the victory for the Black & Gold with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Olga Blank in the top spot.
