RICHMOND, Va. – Following the lead of upperclassmen Kateryna Yergina and Alex Bara, the Virginia Commonwealth University women's tennis team rolled to a 4-1 victory over Penn on the second day of the VCU 4-1 Invitational.
It was the third straight win to start the 2011 spring season for the Black & Gold. VCU has now won 23 of its last 30 matches dating back three years.
"We challenged our girls to come with a renewed focus because we thought we didn't get that from the whole team yesterday," Head Coach Paul Kostin said. "Always good to start the season off with three straight wins."
Yergina started things off by quickly dispatching Penn's Alexa Ely, 6-1, 6-2 in the second singles position, while Bara followed by picking up a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Jaime Yapp-Shing.
Freshman Olga Terteac rounded out the winners for the Rams, topping Stephanie Do, 7-5, 6-2 at the fourth spot.
The Black & Gold is back in action for two matches on Sunday taking on Norfolk State and UNC Wilmington in the final day of the VCU 4-1 Invitational
