RICHMOND, Va. - VCU Women's Lacrosse team has been honored as an IWLCA Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad for the 2017-18 academic year. Five individual VCU players aslo earned a place on the IWLCA Zag Sports Division I Academic Honor Roll for posting a GPA of 3.5 or higher during 2017-18.
To qualify for the prestigious Academic Honor Squad, a team must post a 3.0 or higher team GPA for the academic year. VCU was honored among a list of 313 schools across Division I, II, III and NAIA. In order to join the DI Honor Roll, student-athletes must be a junior, senior or graduate student and have earned a cumulative academic GPA of 3.50 or greater. 429 student-athletes from 98 different institutions earned a spot on the 2018 IWLCA Zag Sports Division I Academic Honor Roll.
VCU's Sky Hyatt, Kelley Flint, Olivia McGrath, Mary Hagopian and Gabrielle Gibbons all earned DI Honor Roll honors. The five student-athletes were all contributors on the 2017-18 squad that qualified for the A-10 Tournament for the first time in the program's three-year history. The team also earned its highest A-10 finish and tied for fourth in the regular-season A-10 standings.
Hyatt, a business major with a concentration in risk management and insurance, also received a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team for the second straight year. She has been on the Dean's List six times and garnered All-Atlantic 10 athletic honors for the third straight year. She was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team this past season. Hyatt had previous been amed to the A-10 All-Rookie Team in 2016 and was selected to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team in 2017 as a redshirt sophomore. Hyatt, a midfielder, scored a program-record 51 goals this past season and also produced a team-best 60 points and 81 draw controls. Hyatt became the first player in the three-year history of the program to reach 100 career goals.
Flint received her degree in mass communications in May, with a concentration in journalism and a minor in environmental studies. A three-year starter, she's scooped up 21 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers this season. McGrath was named to the A-10 All-Academic Team last season as a sophomore and currently holds a 3.8 GPA with a major in business. McGrath has made the Dean's List and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester at VCU.
Hagopian is currently majoring in accounting and the junior played in all 18 games with 17 starts this past season for the Rams. She scored two goals, added one assist, collected 17 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers. Gabrielle Gibbons is majoring in Marketing and minoring in Mandarin and Asian Studies. Gibbons played in three games this past season scoring one goal and causing one turnover.
