The Short Story: Trailing by as many as 12 points late in the third quarter, VCU rallied to tie the game at 58-58 with 3:19 remaining. The two teams traded the lead until Kseniya Malashka hit the game-winning shot with 4.8 seconds remaining. The Rams played without leading scorer Tera Reed.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Dayton jumped out to an 8-2 lead with 4:42 left in the first quarter and led 11-7 after the quarter.
  • The Flyers pushed their lead to 20-11 with 3:28 left before halftime but the Rams scored 11 of the half's final 19 points to cut the deficit to just 28-22.
  • The Flyers had their largest lead of the game at 45-33 with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter.
  • VCU's offense came to life as the Rams went on a 20-8 run to tie the game 53-53 with 6:27 left in the fourth quarter.
  • The game was tied three more times in the final few minutes until Malashka hit the game-winning basket on a baseline pass from Danielle Hammond with 4.8 seconds left.
  • The Flyers' Scaife missed a contested layup that would have tied the game at the buzzer.
