RICHMOND, Va. – VCU freshman point guard Keira Robinson is off to an impressive start to her collegiate career as she earned her league-best third Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor on Monday after helping the Rams extend their best start in school history to 15-2.
Robinson averaged 14.5 points, 8.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals last week. She posted her first career double-double with a game-high 21 points and 10 assists in a win over defending league champ Saint Joseph's, while also hitting a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line to go along with five rebounds and two steals against the Hawks. She began the week with eight points and seven assists at La Salle.
The Columbia, S.C. native entered Sunday's game ranked 13th nationally with 6.5 assists per game, which is the second highest mark among all freshmen in the country. Robinson, who has dished out 10 or more assists three times this season, is averaging 8.4 thefts in her last nine outings.
In all, Robinson (3) and classmate Isis Thorpe (1) have collected four Rookie of the Week awards, which is the most by any school in the A-10. Senior Robyn Parks has also earned a league-high four Player of the Week citations this year.
VCU returns to the Verizon Wireless arena on Wednesday, Jan. 15 when it faces league runner-up Fordham at 7 p.m. televised locally on CBS 6.3. The Rams then travel to UMass for a 2 p.m. tipoff on Jan. 18.
