VCU's Pellechio Named A-10 Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University freshman guard Jessica Pellechio was named Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week on Monday after helping lead the Rams (5-4) to a pair of victories.

Pellechio averaged a team-best 16.5 points to go along with 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game in wins over UMBC and Coppin State.  She led all scorers with a game-high 20 points Wednesday against the Retrievers before adding 13 points, a career-high tying six rebounds, two assists and four steals at CSU.  Pellechio also hit three straight 3-pointers to fuel a big second half run Sunday against the Eagles.

The Annadale, N.J. native leads the A-10 and ranks second in the nation with 3.7 3-pointers per game.  She is also tied for seventh in scoring (14.6 ppg), tops among A-10 freshman, while leading all league rookies with 2.2 steals per game.  Pellechio is the only freshman to rank in the top 20 in the conference in scoring.

VCU, winners of three straight and five of its last six games, begins a season-long three-game home stand on Dec. 16 against East Carolina.  Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
