RICHMOND, Va. –VCU freshman center Aprill McRae, who has made three straight starts for the Rams, was named Colonial Athletic Association Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week on Monday after her performance in VCU's last two outings.
McRae averaged 9.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game last week in a pair of matchups against cross-town rival Richmond and CAA foe Northeastern. She contributed a career-high 13 points and seven rebounds against the Spiders on Thursday before adding six points and six boards in the Rams' victory over Northeastern on Sunday. McRae also shot 62 percent from the field, while helping VCU to a win in its CAA opener against the Huskies.
The Raleigh, N.C., native leads all VCU freshmen with 4.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, while averaging 27.1 minutes this year.
VCU travels to East Carolina on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Pirates. The Rams return to the Verizon Wireless Arena on Dec. 18 against Coppin State.
