RICHMOND, Va. – VCU's 2011-12 women's basketball schedule is now complete after the Colonial Athletic Association released its conference ledger. The Rams kick off their CAA slate on Dec. 4 when they welcome Northeastern to the Verizon Wireless Arena.
VCU opens the New Year with a Jan. 5 matchup at defending league champion James Madison before returning home for back-to-back games against UNC Wilmington (Jan. 8) and rival Old Dominion (Jan. 12).
The Black & Gold then begins its longest road trip of the season with games at William & Mary (Jan. 15), UNC Wilmington (Jan. 19) and George Mason (Jan. 22) before playing five of the next seven contests at home. During that stretch VCU welcomes Drexel (Jan. 26), Georgia State (Jan. 29), Hofstra (Feb. 9), James Madison (Feb. 12) and William & Mary (Feb. 16) to the Siegel Center, while making trips to Towson (Feb. 2) and Delaware (Feb. 5).
The Rams conclude the 2011-12 regular season with three of their last four games on the road. VCU will look for its third-straight victory at Old Dominion on Feb. 19 before heading to Atlanta to face Georgia State on Feb. 23. The Black & Gold returns home to face George Mason on Feb. 26 before its finale at Drexel on Feb. 29.
All dates are subject to change, while game times have not yet been announced.
Including its non-conference opponents, VCU has the potential to face nine teams that qualified for postseason play a year ago. The Rams are guaranteed to meet 2010 postseason foes Liberty (WNIT), Charlotte (WNIT semifinals), Richmond (WNIT), and Morgan State (WNIT) and could gain another in Miami (NCAA second round) with its participation in Hurricanes' holiday tournament Dec. 28-29 in Coral Gables, Fla. CAA opponents James Madison (NCAA first round), Old Dominion (WNIT), UNC Wilmington (WNIT), Drexel (WNIT) and Delaware (WNIT) all participated in the postseason last year.
The Rams, who will look for their seventh straight season opening victory when they kick off the 2011-12 campaign against High Point on Nov. 11, are 7-1 all-time in season openers under Head Coach Beth Cunningham. The Black & Gold welcome back four starters, including a pair of All-Colonial Athletic Association performers in seniors Courtney Hurt (first team) and Andrea Barbour (second team). Last year, Hurt turned in perhaps the most dominating season in school history, leading the nation in rebounding (12.4 rpg) and double-doubles (25) while ranking second in the NCAA in scoring (23.2 ppg). She also set VCU's single-season marks in points (720), scoring average, rebounding (385), rebounding average, field goals (253), free throws (193) and double-doubles, while garnering Associated Press All-America distinction. Barbour, meanwhile, finished the 2010-11 campaign strong, averaging 19.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.7 steals per game in the Rams' final 14 outings, including seven 20-point performances.
