RICHMOND, Va. - With less than two weeks left before its opener at High Point University, the VCU women's basketball team is ramping it up at practice, aiming for a fourth straight postseason appearance.

Part of a whole new crop of players will be sophomore Sonia Johnson, who transferred in from Patrick Henry Community College. Prior to suiting up in the Black & Gold for the first time, Johnson chatted with VCU Athletic Commmunications student assistant Nan Turner to let Rams fans know a little more about her.

NT: What's your favorite thing about VCU?
The diversity, it feels good to be around so many different types of people and learning to understand people who are different than me. The people are very friendly!

NT: When you're not on the court, what do you like to do in your free time?
I like to hang out with my teammates whether we have team dinners, watch movies together or all go on team outings. My team makes my off-the-court experience worth it.

NT: If you could play on any other VCU team, which one would you choose and why?
Volleyball because they are all so nice and I played volleyball in highschool and I know that I would be teamed up with hard workers because they worked out with us during the summer.

NT: Who has been the most influential person in your life and why?
My mother, she is a cancer survivor and witnessing her strength and fight encourages me to be the best I can be in everything I do.

NT: What are you most looking forward to this season?
Winning, I am certain that if we work hard as a team, we and our fans can look forward to many wins this season.

NT: What's your favorite and least favorite part of a game day?
My least favorite part is anxiety. When I am hype about a game it makes the day seem so much slower. My favorite part is team bonding right before the game, it makes the win that more worth it.

NT: What's something people would be surprised to know about you
I eat like a man. My teammates joke about how much I eat but I just can't help it.

NT: If you had to describe yourself in one word what would it be and why?
Competitive,  I would use this word primarily because I compete on and off the court nonstop. I somehow always make every situation into a competition (on the court and in the classroom). This helps motivate me to be the best I can be.
